Why per-lookup instead of a subscription?

Most people don't get an unknown call every day — maybe a handful of times a year. A monthly membership charges you the same whether you use it once or a hundred times, which makes it a bad fit for occasional use. WHODIS flips that: pay only for the lookups you actually run, and pay nothing in the months you don't need it.

Reverse-phone and people-search sites commonly sell monthly memberships — figures referenced on our comparison pages are drawn from each provider's own published pricing, not estimates. Spending $10 on Pack20 buys 20 solved lookups you can use whenever you need them, with nothing left running after you're done.

What counts as "solved"?

A lookup is solved only when we find a name for the number: a person or a business. That's the only time you're charged $1 (or one Pack20 credit). Line type, carrier and location on their own are free, and if no name comes back nothing is charged — you keep your credit or your dollar. Names can be outdated, because numbers get reassigned.

That's the whole billing model: no credit spent on a lookup that didn't actually answer your question. You see the result before you're asked to pay, so there's never a surprise charge for an unsolved number.

No subscription, really

There's no recurring billing anywhere in the WHODIS checkout flow — no trial that silently converts to a monthly charge, no plan to remember to cancel, and no card held on file waiting to bill you again next month. You buy Single Solve or Pack20 when you need them, and that's the only time your card is charged.

Pack20 credits don't expire, so there's no pressure to "use them before they're gone" the way a monthly allotment resets and disappears. Buy 20 credits today, use the last one a year from now if that's how long it takes — the price doesn't change and nothing is clawed back.

Common questions

Do I ever get charged a monthly fee?

No. WHODIS has no subscription, no recurring billing, and no automatic renewals of any kind. You pay $1 per solved lookup, or $10 for a Pack20 of 20 credits, only when you choose to buy.

What happens if WHODIS can't identify the caller?

If we don't find a name, no credit is charged and no dollar is taken. Line type, carrier and location are free; you only pay when we find a name.

Do Pack20 credits expire?

No. Pack20 credits stay in your account indefinitely — use one tomorrow or a year from now, at the same 50¢-per-credit value.

How is this cheaper than a monthly membership?

It depends on how often you look up numbers. If you need one or two lookups a year, $1–$2 total beats a monthly plan you'd otherwise pay for every month, used or not. If you run dozens of searches a week, a flat-rate competitor membership may work out cheaper — see our comparison pages for the specific math against each one.

Is reverse phone lookup legal?

Yes, for personal use. WHODIS may not be used for employment screening, tenant screening, or any purpose governed by the FCRA. See our Terms of Service for full details.

Have the number already?
